Reflection
At the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus offers a series of blessings that have become known as the Beatitudes. These words present a vision of life that challenges many of the values of the world around us. Instead of praising wealth, power or success, Jesus speaks of blessing for the poor, the gentle, the merciful and those who work for peace.
The Beatitudes invite us to see the world differently. They remind us that the kingdom of God is built not on dominance or competition, but on humility, compassion and justice. Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness are blessed because they long for a world where fairness, dignity and peace are shared by all people.
This teaching of Jesus has a powerful connection to social justice. The Beatitudes encourage us to notice those who struggle and to respond with generosity and solidarity. They challenge us to create communities where people are treated with respect and where the needs of the most vulnerable are not ignored.
To live the Beatitudes is to walk a path of compassion. It means choosing mercy over judgement, peace over conflict, and justice over indifference. Even small acts of kindness and fairness can help bring the vision of the Beatitudes to life in our families, schools and communities.
The words of Jesus continue to inspire people across the world to work for a society that reflects the values of God’s kingdom — a society shaped by mercy, humility and justice.
